IMAN HATHAWAY
Iman is a Michigan based artist self taught in the medium of glass. In 2022, Iman began working with glass as a resident artist at the Burren College of Art located in Ballyvaughan, Ireland where she spent three months independently researching stained glass techniques and allowing her inspiration to bloom surrounded by the mountains and lush greenery of the valley in the Burren. Much of her work from this period includes pressed flora foraged from the valley and mountains surrounding the school.
Presently Iman continues to work as an independent artist and educator teaching stained glass techniques and exhibiting work all over Michigan and the midwest while expanding her material into metal, mirror and wood. Her subject matter centers on the landscapes of women of color and the objects of their power while exploring themes of rest and prosperity to portrait their abundance.
“Take your time.
Absorb more light.”
“I like to use glass as a medium to make a kindred connection with nature as the viewer, just like the environment around them, thrives on the light the glass casts. The goal of all my work in this medium is to encourage viewers to make space and time throughout the day for rest while spending more time in front of a window absorbing light.”
I include pressed flora in my work as recollections of seasons and a reminder of the beauty in our temporary existence. All flora is collected from Michigan and hand pressed in house.
